Good Talk EDU Privacy Policy

Effective: April 13, 2026

Updated: April 14, 2026

Good Talk EDU is the Good Talk experience operated for schools, districts, and education institutions under a Good Talk EDU contract, with school-specific rules for access, data use, student protection, and student data. This policy applies when Good Talk is used under a Good Talk EDU contract with a school, district, or education institution (the "EDU Service"). Good Talk EDU use is also governed by the Good Talk EDU Terms of Use and the applicable Good Talk EDU contract or other written agreement between Good Talk and the school or district.

This policy is intended to support FERPA and COPPA compliant school use. If a written agreement between Good Talk and a school or district includes stronger or more specific privacy terms, that written agreement applies for that school or district.

Your privacy and trust is sacred to us.

Our Role for Schools

For Good Talk EDU, we process student information only to provide the EDU Service for the educational purposes authorized by the school or district. Where applicable under FERPA, Good Talk may act as a school official or service provider performing an institutional service or function for the school or district. The school or district remains responsible for determining which students, educators, counselors, administrators, crisis responders, and other school officials are authorized to use or access the EDU Service.

Student Data and School Data We Process

Depending on the school configuration and how the EDU Service is used, Good Talk EDU may collect or process the following information:

How We Use Student Data

How We Do Not Use Student Data

FERPA Commitments

Good Talk EDU is designed to support school and district compliance with FERPA. Good Talk uses Student Data and records only for the educational purposes authorized by the school or district. Good Talk is subject to school or district control for the use and maintenance of Student Data under the applicable school agreement. We do not redisclose personally identifiable information from education records except as permitted by FERPA, directed by the school or district, or as required by law.

Parents and eligible students generally exercise FERPA rights, including access, correction, amendment, and deletion requests, through their school or district. Good Talk will reasonably support schools and districts in responding to those requests.

COPPA Commitments

Good Talk EDU is designed for responsible school use with students, including students under 13. When a school or district authorizes Good Talk EDU for educational use, Good Talk relies on school authorization where COPPA permits a school to consent on behalf of parents for collection and use of student personal information solely for the use and benefit of the school and for no other commercial purpose.

Upon request from a school or district, Good Talk will provide information about the types of personal information collected from students, support review and deletion of student personal information, and support prevention of further use or collection for a student. Parents who want to review or delete a student's personal information should contact the student's school or district, or contact Good Talk so we can help route the request appropriately.

AI Processing

Good Talk EDU uses AI service providers to provide simulated conversations, coaching, scoring, scenario metadata, safety checks, voice responses, and transcription. This means conversation prompts, conversation history, text, audio streams, transcripts, generated responses, and related metadata may be sent to AI providers to provide the EDU Service. Good Talk uses provider settings and agreements which prohibit provider model training from Student Data or storage of this data per our Zero Data Retention arrangements.

Safety Alerts and Authorized Review

Good Talk EDU includes safety checks for categories such as self-harm, violence or hate, criminal planning, illegal weapons, regulated or controlled substances, and sexual content. If student conversation content is flagged in the EDU Service, Good Talk may create a safety alert with a limited conversation snippet, category, student, district, school, cohort, and conversation reference. Good Talk may notify authorized crisis responders, school administrators, and cohort teachers configured by the school. Authorized school users may review conversation details, add annotations, assign alerts, resolve alerts, and review related audit logs according to their role and school configuration.

Good Talk EDU is a conversation practice and coaching tool. It is not emergency support, therapy, medical advice, legal advice, or a substitute for professional judgment by educators, counselors, clinicians, parents, or guardians. Schools should use Good Talk EDU within their own student support, safety, acceptable use, and supervision practices.

Service Providers and Disclosure

We may use service providers that help us host, secure, support, analyze, and operate Good Talk EDU, including providers that support AI processing, transcription, infrastructure, databases, logging, diagnostics, analytics, authentication, email delivery, customer support, and security. Examples include AI providers, analytics providers, Google sign-in, Google Workspace Directory services where configured, cloud infrastructure, database providers, and email delivery providers. These service providers may process Student Data only to provide services to Good Talk and must maintain appropriate confidentiality, security, and data protection obligations.

We may disclose Student Data when directed by the school or district, with appropriate consent, to comply with law or legal process, or when we believe disclosure is necessary to protect students, users, Good Talk, the EDU Service, or the public from harm, fraud, abuse, or security threats.

Admin Controls, Exports, and Deletion Tools

Good Talk EDU includes role-based admin console tools for authorized school users. Depending on role and school configuration, those tools may allow school officials to view analytics, review conversations, manage safety alerts, add annotations, export district or school data, and request or perform deletion of student, scenario, conversation, cohort, school, or district records. Teachers are scoped to their assigned cohorts, and school or district administrators are scoped according to their authorized roles and schools.

Data Retention and Deletion

We retain Student Data only for as long as reasonably necessary to provide the EDU Service, fulfill the authorized educational purpose, comply with school agreements and legal obligations, resolve disputes, maintain security, and enforce our agreements. Good Talk EDU supports permanent deletion workflows for school-controlled data such as student records, scenarios, conversations, cohorts, schools, districts, alerts, and annotations. Some audit logs or security records may be retained where needed for legal, security, accountability, or contractual reasons. When Student Data is no longer needed for the authorized educational purpose, or when a school or district requests deletion in accordance with its agreement, we will delete or de-identify the Student Data unless retention is required by law or a written agreement.

Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect Student Data against unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, and destruction. These safeguards include access controls, role-based authorization, secure storage practices, audit logging, and security monitoring appropriate to the nature of the information.

Data Location

Student Data may be processed and stored in the United States or in other locations where Good Talk and its service providers operate, unless a school or district agreement requires a different arrangement.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we make material changes affecting Good Talk EDU student data practices, we will provide notice to schools or districts as appropriate and update the "Updated" date above.
